The winning design

Two eFlorist shop students achieved a double win at New Covent Garden’s College Day on 10th November. Kate Bainbridge of Simply Flowers in Bovey Tracey and Caroline Crabb of Fleurtations in Bodmin were two of a four girl team from the Academy of Floral Art in Exeter who entered competitions in the Level 4 category.

Their brief? To design a pedestal arrangement for a dinner party that would be a ‘talking point’ and was all about seasonal flowers so no sundries or visible container and all on a budget of £35.

The Academy of Floral Art gained 186 points out of 200; 100 of these points were for their costings including profit margin and time consideration.

Not only did this team win the Level 4 prize (£150 to spend at the market) but they took ‘Overall winner’ prize too which means they all won a free day’s tuition at the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers. (Kate spent her winnings on glossy black urn and Caroline on a selection of vases.)

When they heard they’d won, “There was a lot of whooping!” exclaimed Kate.

“It was just brilliant,” added Caroline, “There were 27 other teams from 21 colleges and we came out top!”

In case their names sound familiar, they won prizes at Chelsea last year – Kate a Silver Gilt and Caroline, Silver.

Gluttons for punishment, the girls are keen to compete at Chelsea again this year. Consequently Kate has already secured her place competing in the Bath heats.

eFlorist would like to congratulate the girls on all their achievements – well done to you both!
